I designed this pretty 18 inch doll hat as a Christmas present for my daughter.  The hat was rather plain on its own, but a simple crocheted flower is just the thing to jazz it up a bit. I thought I would put this free American Girl Doll crochet pattern online so others could make it too.  It works up really quickly and is a great pattern for beginning crocheters!  Maybe you could use it to teach your daughter or granddaughter to crochet 🙂

Instructions to make this crochet hat for American Girl Dolls:

The hat is worked in a round. Do not join rounds unless noted. Use a safety pin or stitch marker to keep your place.

Round 1: Ch 2, 12 sc in 2nd ch from hook (12)

Round 2: sc in each st around (12)

Round 3: 2 sc in each st around (24)

Round 4: sc in each st around (24)

Round 5: * sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st. Repeat from * around. (32)

Round 6: sc in each st around (32)

Round 7: sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st. Repeat from * around. (40)

Rounds 8-12: sc in each st around (40)

Round 13: * sc in next 8 sts, sc next 2 sts tog. Repeat from * around. Join. (36)

Round 14: * ch 3, skip next st, sl st in next st. Repeat from * around. Join in first st. Finish off.

Too Small? Go to a Bigger Crochet Hook.
If you make the hat and find it is too tight, as one person commented, try going up to the next size hook. Everyone crochets with different tension so you may need to adjust the hook size for best fit.

Flower Embellishment

Work in rounds for this pattern. Do not join.

Round 1: Ch 2, 6 sc in second ch from hook (6 sc)

Round : 2 sc in each st around (12 sc)

Round : * Sl st in next st, (sc, dc, tc, dc, sc) in next st *. Repeat from * around. Join in initial sl st. (6 petals)

Finish off. Sew a button in the center of the flower. Sew flower to hat, referring to photo for placement.

Quick Crochet Tip:  Keep your yarn tangle free!

When I crochet, I use a yarn holder to ensure my yarn stays clean and tangle-free. The yarn feeds out the hole at the top. It saves so much hassle!

Too cute! My granddaughter thinks she’s too big for dolls now. Maybe if I show this to her she’ll want to play with dolls a little bit longer.

My daughter loved her American Girl Dolls, in fact we have them put away just in case she has a daughter in the future. This is such a cute hat, and it makes it so much fun for girls to dress up their dolls just like them and take them anywhere! Adorable!

My daughters loved their dolls too. Sadly the youngest is in middle school now and past playing with dolls. I thought all my doll tutorials might be helpful to some other moms who have American Girl obsessed daughters too 🙂 Hopefully I will someday have some granddaughters who enjoy them so I can come up with some new doll projects.

Thanks Fiona! My mother was always making me things when I was little too. I think that is why I enjoy making things for my own daughters so much.

So cute! I made hats for a few of my daughter’s dolls last year, but with pompoms on top. When she sees this one with the flower, she’s going to want a few of these too…
