Looking for a last minute easy Valentine’s Day gift? This painted mason jar candy holder is simple to make and a great way to show someone you care!
My husband knows that I love him, but I am not sure he knows exactly all the reasons I love him. It’s not just the big things, it’s the little things too. So this year for Valentine’s Day, I wanted to come up with a gift that showed him how much I appreciate him and love him for all those little things that he thinks go unnoticed.
With only 2 weeks until Valentine’s Day, I knew it needed to be something that was easy to make. Inspiration struck when I saw a cute painted mason jar candle holder on Pinterest. The jar was painted except for a little window through which the candle light could shine. I decided to do something similar but instead of turning it into a candle holder, I was going to fill it with foil wrapped heart shaped chocolates. Each heart shaped chocolate would have a sticker where I would write one thing I loved about my husband.
Want to make painted mason candy jar for your spouse or significant other for Valentine’s Day? It’s easy! Keep reading to learn how.
- glass mason jar with lid (I used a smooth one)
- pink chalk paint
- paint brush
- scrap of self-adhesive vinyl
- foil-wrapped heart shaped chocolates
- 1″ heart paper punch
- double sided tape
- permanent marker
- 1 unfinished wood mini hearts
- drill with 1/8 inch bit
- jute cording
- white bakers twine
- heart shaped charms
Start by cutting a heart that is approx. 2.5 inches wide out of the self-adhesive vinyl. I just did a Google search for heart line drawing and then printed it and traced it on the back of the vinyl. You could also just freehand draw the heart if you prefer.
Cut out the heart and stick it to your mason jar. You are going to paint around the vinyl heart and then remove it after the paint has dried to leave a heart shaped window.
Use chalk paint to paint the mason jar around the vinyl heart. You will need 3-4 coats of paint. The nice thing about chalk paint is that it dries really quickly. You only need to let it dry 30 minutes or so between coats.
After the paint has thoroughly dried, carefully peel up the vinyl heart. (I recommend using a blade or sharp knife to help you start to pry up the vinyl.) Peel it off slowly so you don’t remove any of the paint around the heart.
Use a 1″ heart paper punch to make cardstock hearts for each chocolate candy. On each heart, write one thing that you love about your significant other. Use double sided adhesive to stick the cardstock heart to the back of each candy.
Fill the mason jar with the chocolate hearts. I used a bag of Dove dark chocolate hearts and it was the perfect amount of candy to fill the mason jar.
Take the lid out of the ring and trace it onto a piece of patterned paper. (I raided my scrapbooking stash!) Cut out the ring and use double sided tape to stick it to the top of the lid. Put the lid back in the ring and screw it down to the top of the mason jar.
Cut a 2 foot piece of jute twine and circle around the top of the ring. Tie in the back with a double knot and cut off any extra twine.
Take your mini wooden heart and drill a 1/8″ inch hole in the top. Use a thin permanent marker to write “Let Me Count the Ways I Love You” on it.
Tie an 18 inch piece of white baker’s twine around the neck of the mason jar. On one strand tie the wooden heart. On the other add two heart charms. Double knot the ends to secure and cut off any extra twine.
And that’s all there is to it. I can’t wait to give it to my husband. I think he is going to love it!
