My girls never seemed to have enough clothes hangers for their American Girl doll clothes. So I came up with this free plastic canvas pattern for DIY doll clothes hangers for 18 inch dolls. Anytime my daughters ran out of hangers, it was quick and easy to make more!
There is a great video on YouTube showing how to make doll clothes hangers from heavy wire. I tried it, but the wire was difficult to twist and I didn’t like that the end of the wire had the potential to snag clothes no matter how tightly I got it twisted. So I decided to use a different material.
In the past, I have seen patterns for Barbie doll hangers made from plastic canvas. So I thought why not come up with a pattern to make doll clothes hangers that are big enough to use for American Girl dolls?
At first, I tried using just one thickness of plastic canvas, but the resulting 18 inch doll clothes hangers were pretty flimsy. They did ok for lighter shirts, but not much else. However, by using 3 thicknesses of plastic canvas, you can make quite a sturdy hanger that can handle even the heavier doll clothes – like coats. To make one hanger, you just cut out three of the same pattern and sew them together.
Does your child always run out of American Girl doll clothes hangers? With just some scraps of plastic canvas, scissors, yarn, and a needle, you can make them as many hangers as they need!
Materials Needed for these DIY Doll Clothes Hangers for 18 inch Dolls
- 7 count plastic canvas in the color of your choice (scraps are good for this project since you don’t need very much)
- dry erase marker
- worsted weight yarn
- plastic canvas needle (#16)
Having trouble finding plastic canvas in local stores? I can hardly ever find plastic canvas in my local craft stores anymore. So I buy my plastic canvas in bulk on Amazon.
Optional supplies to make doll clothes hangers
You don’t absolutely have to have these optional things to make this 18 inch doll clothes hangers free plastic canvas pattern, but they will certainly make your life a little easier! I always have problems threading needles with yarn despite the bigger eye on the plastic canvas needles. So instead of wasting 5 minutes trying to get the yarn through the needle eye by myself, I use a sturdy needle threader and can thread the needle in about 3 seconds!
A plastic canvas hole counter and dry erase marker are both great for cutting out the patterns. Looking at those little squares on the canvas and counting them can make you go cross-eyed sometimes. So a plastic canvas hole counter definitely helps my eyes by allowing me to quickly count holes and bars on the canvas.
And I always draw the pattern on the canvas with a fine tip dry erase marker before I cut it out. If I discover I make a mistake, I can just wipe away the lines with a paper towel. This ensures that I don’t waste canvas because any mistakes are caught before I cut the plastic canvas.
Instructions to make your own American Girl Doll clothes hangers
Use a dry erase marker to draw the pattern on the canvas to make it easier to cut. (You can wipe it off of the canvas easily after you are done cutting.)
Place the 3 pieces together and overcast the edges with yarn all the way around the hanger.
That’s all there is to it. You can use the pattern to make as many American Girl doll clothes hangers as you like so you will never run out of doll clothes hangers again.
If you don’t want to make doll clothes hangers, Amazon has some for reasonable prices. I especially like the wood ones!
