This cute Leprechaun Hat Candy Holder would make a great table centerpiece for St Patricks Day! Get the free plastic canvas pattern below.
We added a new corner hutch to my dining room, so I have been enjoying filling one of the shelves with seasonal decorations. I designed this Leprechaun Hat pattern to add to my St. Patrick’s Day display in the dining room.
I filled the hat with Rolos candies, but gold foil covered chocolate coins would work well too. You might want to wait to add the candies until closer to St. Patrick’s Day though. My little scamps have eaten nearly all of the Rolos already 🙂
Finished size of the Leprechaun Hat: 6″ wide by 8″ tall
Materials needed to make this Leprechaun Hat St Patricks Day Plastic Canvas Pattern
Having trouble finding plastic canvas in local stores? I can hardly ever find plastic canvas in my local craft stores anymore. So I buy my plastic canvas in bulk on Amazon.
Cut the Plastic Canvas
Main hat body:
Leave the second circle uncut.
Stitching the Leprechaun Hat Pattern:
Stitch the following Leprechaun hat pattern pieces according to the diagrams below.
Stitch hat brim all in green. I just used 2 different shades for the pattern so it was easier to differentiate the rows in the pattern. Leave the edges unfinished for now.
Stitch the main part of the hat all in green, overlapping the grey areas before you work the left-most row of gobelin stitches.
Whipstitch the joining edge to the main hat. Overcast the top edge of the hat.
Stitch the hat band in black. Whipstitch the short edges together to form a ring. Overcast the top and bottom edges.
Stitch the buckle using gold metallic cord. Overcast all edges.
Stitch each shamrock using green metallic cord. Overcast the edges.
Assembling the Leprechaun Hat Candy Dish free plastic canvas pattern
Using green yarn, whipstitch the main hat to the brim.
Place the unstitched 6 inch circle on the bottom of the hat brim. Using green yarn, overcast the edge of the hat, working through both layers. This will form the base of your candy holder.
Slide the hat band on the hat, leaving about 1/4 inch from the bottom of the hat. Use a couple of dots of hot glue to hold the band in place.
Use hot glue to attach the buckle to the hat band. Use a dot of hot glue to attach a shamrock button to the right upper corner of the buckle.
Use hot glue to attach a glittery shamrock button to the centers of the 3 stitched shamrocks.
Cut (3) 7 inch lengths of the floral wire with wire cutters. Use hot glue to attach the wire to the back of the shamrocks along the stem.
Use dots of hot glue to attach the floral stems to the back of the hat. Stick the bottom of the stems down in the hat band. Then use dots of hot glue to attach the stems to the top of the hat. This will help them stand up and make them more stable. Bend the shamrocks out as desired.
Fill the candy holder with gold foil wrapped candies. Rolos work great. You can also use chocolate gold coins, or gold wrapped mini Reeces Cups.
