This Patriotic Berry Trifle Recipe features yummy angel food cake layered with a sinfully rich whipped cream and sweet berries. It is the perfect dessert to make for the 4th of July!
I first saw this recipe in Taste of Home magazine and thought it would be a great dessert to make for my family’s 4th of July BBQ. This recipe is so delicious, it’s hard to eat just one serving.
To decorate the top of this patriotic berry trifle recipe, I used little 4th of July cupcake picks that I found at our local cake supply shop. Any flag picks, or red, white, and blue stars would work great for making this dessert more festive.
The original recipe calls for Cool Whip though which I avoid because of the high fructose corn syrup. So I have modified the recipe a bit to use real cream. I also left out the gelatin because unless it is made with fruit juice, it is pretty much nutritionally bankrupt. So the end result is a wee bit healthier and oh so good. Just the perfect cold treat on a hot summer day!
4th of July Patriotic Berry Trifle Recipe
- one angel food cake cut into 1 inch cubes
- 1 pint heavy whipping cream
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1 package (3.4 ounces) instant vanilla pudding mix
- 1 cup milk
- 1 pint fresh blueberries
- 1 quart fresh strawberries, sliced
Using an electric mixer, mix milk and pudding mix for 2 minutes. Let stand for a few minutes until it starts to set. In a large bowl, beat cream on high speed until it begins to thicken. Add confectioners’ sugar and continue beating until soft peaks form. Fold into the pudding.
To assemble the trifle, layer half the cake cubes, half of the blueberries, half the pudding mixture, and half of the berries. Repeat. Decorate with patriotic flag and star picks if desired.
Although I make this dessert primarily for the 4th of July, you could certainly make this yummy dessert anytime. It would be perfect for potlucks or family reunions as it travels well.
I recommend serving it in a trifle bowl that has a lid. I use the Pampered Chef Trifle Bowl. It has a detachable pedestal and a plastic lid to keep it fresh if you make this dessert ahead of time.
